Interview: Artist Emma Wells

March 19, 2011

Your favourite thing about Spring?

Heightened birdsong; especially skylarks.

Another South-West artist who’s work you admire?

Tim Shaw – sculptor.

Tell me a little about your new work?

Breezier! New bowls and panels in a pale golden finish, continuing the theme of Victorian opulence.

Plans for your work in 2011?

I am working on an ornate cake stand and hope to design some glass lights. Also, I am taking part in an exhibition at the Bishop’s Palace in Wells in June so, this will entail designing some new work to be displayed in the garden.

My top 5 walks:

  • Tasmin Trail, New Zealand South Island. This is THE walk that started my passion for walking!
  • The walk to the beach from my studio on the banks of the Helford River in Cornwall after a day’ s work, in the summertime, with my dog Dillon, husband Adam, a bottle of wine, a picnic and my swimming togs.
  • Walking in Hayle Towans, Cornwall at sunset with my 14 year old dog, Dillon and watching her run around joyously, like a puppy.
  • Any walk now where my dog Finn doesn’t roll in animal excrement!!!
  • To the pub at the end of a long hike!!!

Emma is taking part in Made in Bristol: Spring at Colston Hall on the 16 & 17 April.
